What is a Servo Drive and its benefits?

servo drive is an electronic amplifier which is  used to power electric servomechanisms

A servo drive monitors the feedback signal from the servomechanism and continually adjusts for deviation from expected behavior.Servomechanisms are automated control systems used in everything from robotics ,CNC Machines  and many  more.

In a servo system, a servo drive or servo amplifier is responsible for the powering the servo motor. The servo drive is an important component in finding the performance of the servo system.

But when compared to straight power amplifiers, servo drive gives a wide range of benefits for autmation machining systems which includes speed, super postioning and motion control

When compared to straight power amplifiers, servo drives offer a wide range of advantages for automatic machining systems, including superior positioning, speed, and motion control.

Diagnostics of Servo Systems

All servo systems require four main components to operate:

  • Controller
  • Servo drive or servo amplifier
  • Motor
  • Feedback device

The controller determines what the motor must do and then triggers the drive to send the necessary electrical energy to the motor to make the required move happen.

More specifically, the controller is responsible for calculating the path or trajectory required and sending low-voltage command signals to the drive.

The drive then sends the necessary voltage and current to the motor to achieve the required motion.

Servo drives can control torque, velocity, or position …  although in servo systems, the most common parameter controlled is torque

Servo Drive

There are several types of servo drives. A common variation is the torque-mode amplifier

These convert the command signal from the controller into a specific amount of current to the motor. Because current is directly proportional to torque, the drive is controlling the amount of torque that the motor produces.

In contrast, with a linear drive (in which current is proportional to force) there’s direct control of the motor’s force output.

Why we Should Use Servo Drives

As we know servo drives built to provide accuracy and good performance it vary according to power ouputs and features sets to find a servo drive as per automation requirement.

If we are for a higher torque than stepper motor or just more accuracy control then servo derive meets as per requirement.

Servo drives are a necessary component for the machining or manufacturing of a product as per our requirement .

  1. I would like to thnkx for the efforts you have put in writing this web site. I am hoping the same high-grade site post from you in the upcoming as well. In fact your creative writing abilities has inspired me to get my own web site now. Really the blogging is spreading its wings rapidly. Your write up is a great example of it. Russel Plotner
